Why Brian Friend Has Doubts About Alexis Raptis

20 June 2026, 14:35 (94 days ago) · BurpeeTalk News editorial

Alexis Raptis did exactly what you'd expect from an elite athlete. She qualified convincingly for the CrossFit Games, sits near the top of the rankings once again, and has multiple top-10 finishes to her name. Yet an unusual debate emerged this week: is she actually prepared for the conditions awaiting her in California?

The question came from analyst Brian Friend. During a livestream, he said he has serious concerns about Raptis's heat tolerance. In his view, it's a problem when an athlete appears to rely on extensive cooling measures during competition, ice baths, fans, and other methods to keep body temperature in check.

His conclusion was sharp. Perhaps even too sharp.

Because while Raptis has visibly struggled with overheating during competition, her results are hard to ignore. Since her debut at the highest level, she has almost consistently finished among the top ten women in the world. In both 2023 and 2024, she placed sixth globally.

That's what makes this debate interesting.

What does "being ready for the Games" actually mean? Does it mean an athlete can have no weaknesses whatsoever? Or does it mean an athlete keeps performing in spite of those weaknesses?

Nearly every Games athlete has an area that raises questions. Some struggle with swimming. Others with heavy barbells. Still others with long endurance events. For Raptis, heat management appears to be the recurring concern.

But perhaps that's exactly what makes elite sport so fascinating.

The CrossFit Games aren't designed to find perfect athletes. They're designed to find out who handles imperfection best.

And on that front, Alexis Raptis has delivered more than enough evidence.

The question, then, isn't whether she belongs on the sport's biggest stage.

The question is whether her greatest opponent this summer won't be the other women, but the California sun.
