Are the CrossFit Semifinals Still Regional, or Has the Sport Outgrown That Model?

The path to the CrossFit Games used to be straightforward: complete the Open, compete at Regionals, and perform well enough to earn a spot at the Games. Geography played a central role in that system. That model has since changed significantly, raising the question of whether the current Semifinals structure still reflects how the sport has evolved on a global scale.
The CrossFit Games have long attracted more than just an American audience. Athletes from Europe, Australia, South America, and Asia rank among the world's best, and the Semifinals are held across multiple continents. Yet criticism is growing louder that the Semifinals format no longer accurately reflects where the talent actually is, and that some regions receive a disproportionately high or low number of qualifying spots.
For Dutch CrossFitters, this is far from an abstract debate. European athletes compete in one of the most competitive and demanding Semifinals fields in the world, while other regions with less competition still receive the same number of Games tickets. Whether CrossFit HQ will fundamentally rethink the regional model remains unclear, but the conversation surrounding it can no longer be ignored.
