Battle of the Camps
The organization behind SoCal appears to be working on a new team concept that is already generating plenty of speculation. During a recent podcast, CrossFit athlete Dallin Pepper shared some initial details about what is currently being described as a true Battle of the Camps.
According to Pepper, the event will revolve around training camp teams, with presumably three men and three women competing together for their camp. Names such as Brute Strength, Proven and Training Think Tank are mentioned as logical participants, while a team of independent athletes also appears to be a possibility.
More striking, however, was what Pepper did not say. When the conversation turned to potential participants, the reigning CrossFit Games runner-up let slip that one major training camp will likely not be sending a team.
"There's one that won't be there and people will be surprised by that," Pepper said cryptically, without revealing further details.
More than an individual battle
The concept fits a trend that has become increasingly visible within the sport in recent years. More and more top athletes no longer train individually, but are part of professional training groups with their own coaching structure, training philosophy and identity.
This creates, for the first time, an opportunity to pit not just athletes but complete training methods against one another. Fans get a rare chance to see which camp truly performs best when the top athletes from each group come together to form a team.
Echo Bike specialists unite
Pepper also confirmed that he will likely be part of a team featuring several strong endurance specialists. He explicitly pointed to the fact that his group includes multiple athletes who excel on the Echo Bike, a piece of equipment that has proven to be a decisive factor at major competitions in recent years.
Whether that is also a hint about the SoCal programming remains to be seen, but it is clear that teams are assembling their rosters strategically.
A new rivalry
With the CrossFit Games behind us and the Rogue Invitational still on the calendar, Battle of the Camps could turn out to be one of the most interesting concepts of the post-season. The focus is not on the individual athlete, but on the question of which training camp truly has the best formula.
And if Pepper's early hints are any indication, fans can expect at least one surprising absence.
