Fraser Opens the Door

When Matt Fraser confirmed this week that he wants to compete again in 2027, he needed just one sentence to reignite one of the most compelling discussions in CrossFit.

"I can confirm the plan right now is I will be competing in 2027, yes."

The statement came during a training video on the HWPO channel. No event was mentioned, no qualification path discussed, no specific goal announced. Yet the reaction within the sport was immediate: what happens if the most dominant athlete in the history of the sport actually comes back?

The champion never really left

Fraser stepped away after his fifth consecutive CrossFit Games title in 2020. Since then he has built HWPO into one of the most influential training brands in the sport, while a new generation took over the men's competition.

But that generation has largely grown up in Fraser's shadow. For many of today's top athletes, he was not just a competitor but the benchmark.

That became clear in the same video, in which Fraser looked back on his early career. He described how for years he pulled workouts from competitors' social media to chase their times. He specifically mentioned former Games podium athlete Noah Ohlsen as someone whose training scores he deliberately used as a target.

Six years after stepping away, that competitive instinct still appears to be very much alive.

Current athletes are taking it seriously

In episode 93 of Boys Interrupted, Fraser's statement was discussed at length by a panel of current elite athletes.

Notably, nobody dismissed the comeback.

Where many retired champions tend to return only as nostalgic stories, the athletes expect Fraser to be competitive almost immediately. Predictions ranged from a seventh-place finish to a top-five result at the CrossFit Games.

One panelist went straight for fourth place.

That perhaps says more about Fraser's legacy than about his current form. The sport has become faster, more international and deeper since 2020. Yet nobody seems to believe Fraser would return only to finish in the middle of the pack.

Still exceptional

The training footage in the video offers some support for that view.

Fraser completed a workout of 100 back squats, 100 bench presses and 100 deadlifts at bodyweight, followed by a mile run. Weighing roughly 195 pounds, he finished the entire challenge in 36 minutes and 58 seconds.

More telling than the time itself were the comments from people who used to train with him. The video includes a story about a training session shortly after knee surgery in which Fraser held a heart rate of 208 beats per minute while still being able to hold a normal conversation.

That is the kind of physiological capacity that made him virtually untouchable for years.

The question hanging over the sport

For now, the most important information is still missing. Fraser has not said whether his comeback is aimed at the CrossFit Games, a fitness race, an exhibition event or an entirely different competition.

But that almost seems beside the point.

What is interesting about the current generation's reaction is that they are not debating whether Fraser can be competitive. They are mostly debating where he would finish.

That is a remarkable distinction.

Six years after stepping away, Matt Fraser is still being treated as a potential title contender. That fact alone explains why his announced return is already one of the most talked-about storylines heading into 2027.
