Gym Race does not need to be Hyrox

The temptation is strong to judge Gym Race by a single question: how close does it come to Hyrox? But anyone who does that misses exactly what makes this young discipline interesting. The future of fitness racing probably does not lie in copying the dominant format, but in developing alternatives that appeal to different qualities.

That became clear once again last weekend in Utrecht. Not only because of the field, which included experienced Hyrox athletes, but above all because of the ways in which the event differs from the sport everyone compares it to.

Hyrox is built on standardisation

The success of Hyrox is no coincidence. The formula is simple, recognisable and virtually identical anywhere in the world.

Athletes run eight one-kilometre laps and complete eight fixed stations in between: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. That structure makes performances comparable. A time in Amsterdam means the same as a time in Hamburg or Chicago.

That standardisation is perhaps Hyrox's greatest strength. Athletes know exactly what to expect. Coaches can analyse, compare and predict performances. It has brought the sport the professionalisation needed to grow on a global scale.

But standardisation has a downside too. The more events resemble one another, the smaller the distinctive character of any single event becomes.

Gym Race chooses variety

Gym Race appears to move deliberately in the opposite direction.

In Utrecht, participants were presented with a combination of five running laps and a series of paired fitness stations. Sled Pushes were combined with Wall Balls, Slam Balls with a Farmers Carry, while rowing, SkiErg, BikeErg, Lunges, Burpees and Kettlebell Swings followed later in the course.

This creates a different rhythm of competition.

Where Hyrox often follows a pattern of running, station, recovery and running again, Gym Race regularly stacks multiple heavy efforts on top of each other. Local muscle fatigue therefore becomes a factor earlier. The event feels less like a sequence of running intervals and more like a continuous physical test.

That difference should not be overstated, though. Gym Race remains, at its core, an endurance event. Five kilometres of running is still a substantial part of the total workload. Those who cannot run will not win here either.

Yet the emphasis sits in a slightly different place.

Inside and outside

Perhaps even more interesting is the choice to send participants outdoors.

Hyrox is completed almost entirely indoors. That helps create equal conditions. Temperature, surface and environment can all be controlled.

Gym Race lets go of that control, at least in part.

In Utrecht, the course ran both inside and outside the venue. That makes performances harder to compare, but it produces an event with more character. The surroundings become part of the experience rather than mere backdrop.

That may sound like a detail, but it touches on a fundamental question within fitness racing: does the sport want full comparability, or does it want more adventure?

For now, the various organisers are clearly choosing very different answers.

A different sporting culture

The differences are visible on a cultural level too.

Hyrox is moving ever more deliberately toward elite sport. The rules have become stricter, officials intervene more quickly, and at the elite level every repetition is judged against precise standards.

That has increased the sport's credibility. At the same time, it raises the barrier for new participants.

Gym Race appears to be taking a more accessible approach for now. The focus is more on participation, guidance and the race experience. That does not mean performance matters less, but it does mean the atmosphere feels different.

The two formats therefore represent different visions of the same sport.

Why that is good news

That is precisely why Gym Race should be careful not to become too much like Hyrox.

The biggest mistake a challenger can make is becoming a lighter copy of the market leader. The history of sport shows that alternatives only succeed when they offer something the original does not.

Fitness racing is still in an early growth phase. The market is large enough for multiple formats, provided they genuinely differ from one another.

Hyrox has proven that a worldwide audience exists for hybrid fitness competitions. Gym Race shows that the same ingredients can be combined in a different way.

For the sport as a whole, that may be the most interesting development of all. Not because a competitor to Hyrox is emerging, but because fitness racing is finally beginning to discover how many different forms it can take.
