From 650 to 1.5 Million

12 August 2026, 08:39 (42 days ago) · BurpeeTalk News editorial

In 2017, 650 people stood at the start line of an unknown fitness competition in Hamburg. Nine years later, the same organization sells more than one million tickets per year, operates in 34 countries and expects more than 1.5 million participants in the 2025/26 season. The rise of HYROX is one of the most remarkable growth stories in the modern fitness world.

The gap nobody saw

The idea behind HYROX was surprisingly simple. While millions of people trained in gyms every week, no sport existed that was built specifically for that audience.

Runners had marathons. Cyclists had gran fondos. Triathletes had Ironman. But for the growing group of fitness enthusiasts, there was no unified competition format where their training came together.

The founders of HYROX spotted a market that had remained hidden inside gyms around the world for years. More than half of all active people considered fitness their sport, yet had no competition of their own.

HYROX was going to change that.

A format that is the same everywhere

Where many events grow by constantly adapting, HYROX chose the opposite from day one.

The recipe stayed unchanged: eight kilometers of running, alternated with eight functional fitness workouts. Whether a participant starts in Hamburg, London, New York or Dubai, the competition is exactly the same.

That standardization transformed HYROX from an event into a sport.

Results became comparable. World records gained meaning. Athletes could measure their performance against participants on the other side of the world.

That very simplicity proved to be one of the greatest forces behind its international growth.

The years that decided everything

Success did not come overnight. The early years were largely about proving that the concept worked.

When the coronavirus pandemic shut down the events industry in 2020, HYROX appeared to be struck at the most vulnerable moment of its existence. The company revolved entirely around large-scale sporting events.

Yet the organization chose not to stand still.

While competitions were impossible, investment went into online events, newsletters, gym partnerships and community building. In hindsight, that period proved crucial to the explosion that followed.

When the doors reopened, an engaged following was ready and waiting, and had not forgotten the brand.

The first sold-out event in London in 2022 was later seen as the turning point.

Growth that exceeded expectations

Since then, demand for HYROX has seemed to grow faster than the company itself can accommodate.

The organization once sold 15,000 race entries in New York. A year later, 55,000 tickets sold in just one hour. According to the founders, even that number could have been higher.

Scarcity has since become part of the success. Race entries are in high demand, participants travel to other countries for a race and many events sell out months in advance.

What started as a fitness competition has grown into a global phenomenon.

More than an event

The scale at which HYROX now operates shows that the organization looks far beyond race days alone.

In addition to ticket sales, the company generates revenue from merchandise, sponsorship deals and gym licenses. Nearly 16,000 gyms worldwide have joined the network.

Revenue of approximately 270 million dollars is expected for 2026.

Notably, that growth was not driven by major advertising campaigns. HYROX built its brand through coaches, gym owners and athletes themselves. The community became not just a customer base, but also an ambassador network.

The next phase

The question is no longer whether HYROX has secured a lasting place in the fitness world. The question is how large it can still become.

The organization speaks openly about further international expansion, new experiences outside of race days and even a possible route toward Olympic recognition for the sport of hybrid racing.

For now, one number remains the most impressive: from 650 participants in a hall in Hamburg to 1.5 million athletes worldwide in less than ten years.

In a fitness industry where trends often come and go, HYROX has achieved what few brands manage. It has created a sport where none existed before.
