Sprague reigns supreme again

SAN JOSE – The CrossFit Games received exactly the finale that befits an anniversary edition. Twenty years after a handful of athletes gathered on a ranch in California, James Sprague once again stood at the top of the podium. The 24-year-old American crowned himself Fittest Man on Earth for the second time after a grueling twenty-event competition in which consistency, resilience and endurance proved decisive.

Sprague's victory did not come as a surprise. The defending champion was among the favorites from opening day and set the tone immediately with strong performances in both the iconic Hopper workout and the demanding trail run at the Ranch. Yet it was not a dominant march to gold. Throughout the weekend he was pursued by Dallin Pepper, who punished every mistake mercilessly and kept the tension alive until the final day.

Those mistakes were precisely what made Sprague's victory remarkable. He lost points through no-reps on pull-ups, gave up valuable positions during a sandbag event, and conceded additional points when he forgot to hit his finish buzzer immediately after a handstand course. In a competition where a single place can shift the standings, these were the kinds of mistakes that could cost a title.

But where many athletes would have been consumed by frustration, Sprague did what champions do: he responded with performances.

During the strength events he posted personal records on his squat and deadlift. On the bike he remained near the front throughout. In the more traditional CrossFit tests, where fitness, strength and skill converge, he remained almost constantly at the top of the field. His ability to bounce back immediately after a setback ultimately proved more important than avoiding mistakes altogether.

The duel with Pepper grew into the story of the week. The two Americans kept each other within constant sight on the leaderboard. When one won an event, the other was often close behind. It produced a championship battle in which there was no room for complacency at any moment.

The decisive blow came on the final day. Sprague won a machine test consisting of 3,600 meters of rowing and 3,600 meters of skiing, extending his lead in the process. Although Pepper kept pressing, he was unable to close the gap. In the closing event, Sprague needed mainly to stay in control. He did so with a tenth-place finish, more than enough to secure the overall victory.

When the final points were tallied, there was no explosion of disbelief, but something that looked more like confirmation.

Sprague spoke openly afterward about the difference compared to his first title. Back then, the victory had been overshadowed by tragic events within the sport. This time it felt different. More complete. More earned. More like he had always imagined a championship would feel.

That confidence was visible throughout the weekend. Not as arrogance, but as conviction. Sprague arrived in California believing he had built the best version of himself. Four days later, he had delivered the proof.

The rest of the men's field will find little comfort in his parting message. Where many champions crave rest after a grueling week, Sprague spoke mainly about what is still to come. At 24 years old, he appears not to be satisfied by success, but energized by the prospect of more.

The CrossFit Games have kept their champion. And perhaps more importantly for his competitors: he looks far from finished.
